FM of China says interactions are very important for China-US ties

(MENAFN) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has described the interactions and mutual respect between President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump as the “most valuable strategic asset” in the bilateral relationship.

Wang made the remarks during a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday, ahead of a planned Xi-Trump summit. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang expressed hopes that both countries “will work in the same direction, make preparations for high-level interactions, and create conditions for the development of bilateral relations.”

The U.S. State Department confirmed that the discussion included the “importance of the U.S.-China relationship” and the upcoming meeting between Xi and Trump. The White House said the two leaders are expected to meet in South Korea during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

“President Xi Jinping and President Trump are both world-class leaders, and their long-standing interactions and mutual respect have become the most valuable strategic asset in China-US relations,” Wang told Rubio. He emphasized that a stable, healthy, and sustainable bilateral relationship “serves the long-term interests” of both nations.

Wang also highlighted progress in addressing trade issues, noting that despite recent setbacks, the two sides “clarified their positions, enhanced understanding, and reached a framework consensus” on resolving economic disputes through negotiations. He expressed hope that “both sides will meet each other halfway, prepare for high-level interactions, and create conditions for the development of bilateral relations.”

Rubio responded by calling the U.S.-China relationship the “most important” bilateral relationship in the world and said he looks forward to “sending a positive signal to the world through high-level interactions.”

While Beijing has not publicly commented on the Xi-Trump summit, officials noted that two days of trade talks were held in Malaysia over the weekend. The U.S. described the discussions as resulting in a “very substantial framework” on trade ties, while China referred to a “preliminary consensus.”
