Trump Vows Strong Backing for Japan’s New Premier
During his visit to Tokyo on Tuesday, Trump praised Japan as “an ally at the strongest level,” highlighting that the longstanding US partner is planning to acquire “a large amount of new military equipment.”
He also expressed confidence that the bilateral relationship would grow “stronger than ever before.”
“I want to just let you know – any time you have any question, any doubt, anything you want, any favors you need, anything I can do to help Japan, we will be there,” Trump emphasized.
Takaichi, a staunch conservative who took office last week, expressed gratitude to Trump for his role in mediating a conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, as well as for his “unwavering commitment to peace and stability” across the region.
The two leaders signed an agreement to cooperate on rare-earth and critical minerals, alongside a commitment to pursue a “new golden age” for the US-Japan alliance.
Earlier this month, Trump had inked a similar arrangement with Australia, designed to challenge China’s control of the rare-earth industry.
Japan has hosted American military forces since the conclusion of World War II and continues to be one of the largest purchasers of US arms.
In recent years, the country has increased its defense spending and equipped its navy with long-range cruise missiles.
